Tsurugaoka Shrine

(Tsurugaoka shrine)

Look for the red arch and you will find either a shrine or temple. Kamakura is littered with them. In order to correctly visit a shrine or temple, one must first be cleansed. This process involves cleaning one's hand and mouth at a water basin. Worshippers then proceed up the steps towards the shrine. A coin is tossed into a collection area, your hands are clapped twice, one bows, and then prays. Fortunes are also told for 100 yen. Shrines and temples are very popular attractions for foreigners and Japanese alike.
