The Great Buddha

The Great Buddha is the most famous monument in Kamakura. Belonging to the Kotokuin Temple of the Jodo sect, it is the second largest statue in Japan. It is 11.40m/37ft high and weighs 93tons, and is considered to be the most beautiful and perfect Buddha statue in the country. Cast in 1252 by either Ono Goroemon or Tanji Hisamoto, it was originally housed in a great hall that was destroyed by a storm in 1369. The position of the Buddha's hands (mundra) expresses steadfastness of belief. For 10 yen one can visit the \ interior of the Buddha and admire the fine craftsmanship.
